The Emerald Isle

southern Ireland. Further west along the coast, places like Baltimore, sheltered behind Sherkin Island and with a boat-building yard and sailing school, and Skibbereen are harbors which attract yachts and small pleasure craft, while out to sea, beyond Sherkin Island and Clear Island, is a point of special interest to serious yachtsmen, the Fastnet Rock. This is the western turning point for one of the world’s great yacht races, the Fastnet Race, which is held every two years and starts from Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The Emerald Isle OPPOSITE ABOVE: The Mediterranean strawberry tree grows well in Ireland’s temperate climate. ABOVE: Cobh is on the south side of Great Island in Cork Harbour and is home to Ireland’s only dedicated cruise terminal.
