The Emerald Isle

CHARLES FORT, KINSALE Charles Fort is a 17th-century star-shaped fort located on the water’s edge, at the southern end of the village of Summer Cove, in Kinsale harbor, County Cork. It was designed by William Robinson who was also the architect of the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, Dublin. The fort has played an important part in Irish history, significantly the Williamite War (1689-91) and the Civil War (1922-23). Charles Fort was declared a National Monument in 1973.
